Transforming the Lighting Landscape

The L Prize competition will substantially accelerate America's shift from inefficient, dated lighting products to innovative, high-performance products. Just as Thomas Edison transformed illumination over a century ago, the L Prize will drive innovation and market adoption.

The L Prize is the first government-sponsored technology competition designed to spur lighting manufacturers to develop high-quality, high-efficiency solid-state lighting products to replace the common light bulb.

The U.S. Department of Energy has released revised competition requirements for the L Prize. The revisions focus on three key areas:

The eligibility requirements for the competition have been revised to reflect current approaches available on the market and to allow for greater participation in the competition.

The correlated color temperature specification for both the incandescent and the PAR 38 categories has been complimented with a specification for chromaticity, in order to maintain the competition's intent for high quality light.

The PAR 38 minimum center beam candle power specification has been revised in order to more accurately reflect the products the L Prize is intended to replace.
